During the ADL Central Pacific Region’s 2018 Annual Meeting, Marcia and David Glassel were elected Life Members of the Board. According to the Regional Bylaws, the honor is reserved for individuals who demonstrate “a distinguished and exemplary record of service.” Marcia and David have served as ADL leaders over the past five decades lending their intellect, grace, and passion. They are the first and only Life Members elected by the Board.
Their nomination was put forward and the evening was led by ADL Regional Chair Linda Horodas. Consul General Shlomi Kofman of Israel served as keynote speaker. Regional Director Seth Brysk also highlighted notable achievements of ADL in the Central Pacific Region during 2017 which included:

- 11,500+ Community members attended ADL public presentations and programs

Education
- Over 63,000 students enrolled in No Place for Hate® schools.
- 53 Bay Area schools joined the No Place for Hate initiative for the 2017-18 school year, pledging to create positive learning environments for K-12 students.
- 81 schools adopted the No Place for Hate Resolution of Respect and the No Place for Hate Promise.
- A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE Institute reached 2,750 teachers in 62 anti-bias training workshops and 1,628 students in 44 Becoming an Ally workshops, deepening participants’ awareness of, and ability to disrupt, bias and bullying.
- Confronting Anti-Semitism reached 610 Jewish teens and their parents in 11 Jewish community workshops throughout the Bay Area and in Utah.
- 2,058 students and their families participated in ADL anti-bias and ally training programs.
- 165 community members were introduced to ADL’s anti-bias and anti-bullying resources through community presentations with the El Cerrito Human Relations Committee, San Francisco YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, San Francisco Family Support Network, and the Skoll Foundation.
Tech
- Formal launch of Center for Technology and Society in Palo Alto under Director Brittan Heller.
- Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Twitter and other leading technology companies join ADL to establish a Cyberhate Problem-Solving Lab to counter the growing hate speech online. The Lab will collaborate to exchange ideas, investigate areas of common risk and opportunity, and seek to devise new approaches to identify and address cyberhate.
- Hosted Game Jam which developed 33 games in a 24-hour period encouraging players to stand up as allies. Developers on 4 continents in 7 countries participated.
- Launched CTS advisory board. The board includes executives from media platforms, leaders from venture capital, and experts from academia, journalism, law enforcement, and the legal community.
International Affairs
- Convened 13 meetings with area Consulates General discussing hate crimes, anti-Semitism, immigration reform, Israel relations, and extremism.
- Held vigil and rally for refugees at City Hall with attendance/participation from former and current members of CA legislature, SF City Council, Jewish religious leaders, and interfaith partners.
- Delivered presentation on hate crimes and coalitions at Mexican Consulate.
- Enacted agreement to provide Mexican Consulates in SF and SJ ADL Spanish language materials.
- Hosted Palestinian Human Rights pioneer Bassem Eid speaking around Bay Area (SJSU, Berkeley Law, International Affairs Committee, OFJCC) on prospects for peace 50 years after 1967 and fallacies of BDS.
Development
- Regional Annual Campaign surpassed $1.9M goal – raising $3.05M—the highest percentage above goal in the country—THANK YOU!!
- Hosted 3rd Annual Speak Up for Justice & Equality on October 19 in Silicon Valley; celebrated the launch of the Center for Technology & Society and shared a sneak peak of The Good Fight book, generously made possible by Eric & Linda Horodas.
- Hosted National Commission Meeting & Never is Now November 12-14.
- Honored Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria with the Americanism Award at the San Francisco City Hall Rotunda.
- Hosted Annual Awards Luncheon on December 5; honored Michael Rubin with the Distinguished Jurisprudence Award and San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón with the Civil Rights Award.
- Glass Leadership Institute convenes 12, engaged, diverse young professionals participating in monthly educational sessions. Entire cohort will participate in ADL Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. May 6-8, 2018.
- Recruited 3 new Central Pacific Regional Board Members.
Civil Rights
- Issued eight security bulletins to 268 Jewish institutions in Northern California, Utah and Hawai’i respectively.
- Successfully lobbied in Sacramento against misguided legislation that would add “peace officers” to the list of enumerated characteristics in California’s hate crime statute. Testified at the Assembly Public Safety Committee’s hearing, met with staff for legislators on the Committee and with the bill’s author.
- Represented ADL at JPAC policy-setting Board meeting in Sacramento and at the annual Lobby Day.
- Continued advocating for and strategizing with allies in Utah to replace state’s unenforceable hate crime law.
- Met with senior civil rights staff for Attorney General Xavier Becerra with a coalition of civil rights and community groups to discuss rising incidence of hate crime in California, and enforcement of hate crime laws.
- Led a presentation about trends in right-wing extremism for Sacramento Jewish community.
- Convened ADL’s Annual Supreme Court Review livestream event at Altshuler Berzon LLP.
- Led a continuing legal education class for the Silicon Valley Federation’s Cardozo Society on current legal issues concerning religious freedom.
- Convened three programs in partnership with Silicon Valley Hillel and San Francisco Hillel at UCB, SJSU, and SFSU featuring British academician and author David Hirsh on contemporary left anti-Semitism.
- Led a workshop at JCRC conference discussing trends in anti-Semitism and actions individuals and communities can take to make a difference locally.
- Represented ADL at How to be a Good Ally conference for civil rights activists in San Francisco. All day conference was co-sponsored with SF Bar Association and garnered over 1,300 attendees.
- Presented 7 week seminar on anti-Semitism and Israel on campus at Kehillah High School in Palo Alto.
- Offered trainings for university administrators at De Anza College.
- Delivered presentation on alt-right at CSU Stanislaus program.
- Partnered with Center for Justice and Accountability to host annual US Supreme Court Review featuring CLE credit.
- Secured commitment of 40 mayors of major cities in the Central Pacific Region to join the ADL-US Conference of Mayors Compact Against Hate.
- Marched at SF Pride with civil rights partner DA George Gascón.
Law Enforcement & Community Security
- Conducted hate crime trainings for UC Davis Police, UC Davis Police Accountability Board, Senior UC Davis administrators and compliance staff, San Francisco State University Police, Santa Rosa Junior College Public Safety Training Center students, and legal staff at the Consulates General of Mexico for San Francisco, Sacramento, Fresno, and San Jose.
- Secured participation of law enforcement from our region in ADL-convened conference calls on High Holy Day security, the spate of bomb threats against Jewish institutions nationwide, and response and meaning of Charlottesville rally and rise of alt-right.
- Provided resources, analysis and intelligence to regional law enforcement towards confronting alt-right and antifa rallies.
- Represented ADL at the U.S. Attorney’s Hate Crime Task Force in Sacramento with new senior command staff of the San Francisco Police Department, and in the SFPD’s Jewish Community Advisory Board.
- Presented at a High Holy Day Security Panel in Sacramento.
